Exploring any dzongkhag in the Himalayan Kingdom of Bhutan is incomplete without indulging in the breathtaking views of the majestic dzongs (fortresses) and impressive statues of protector deities. Mongar adheres to this tradition with its modern and marvelous Dzong, situated on a sloping hill at an altitude of 1,639 meters above the main town. As you step into this charming eastern town, the Mongar Dzong immediately captivates you with its mesmerizing allure and splendid architecture.

Built in 1930 by the third King Jigme Dorje Wangchuck, the dzong stands as a famous landmark in Mongar. Legend has it that an architect from Paro, invited by King Karpo Dung to construct a fort in the province, discovered a white stone resembling a bowl on a mound above Kurichhu during a land survey. He named the place Zhongkhar, meaning white bowl, and it later became Mongar. Today, the Mongar Dzong proudly stands on that very spot, serving as the administrative and religious hub of the district.

Welcoming visitors with two entrances and a central tower (Utse) in a beautiful courtyard, the Mongar Dzong boasts an attractive chapel, four Lhakhangs, and walls adorned with astonishing murals and paintings. It is a perfect testament to the rich traditional Bhutanese architecture thriving in the High Himalayan Mountains since ancient times. A stroll through its wooden-floored corridor offers a tranquil experience, accompanied by the enchanting prayers of the monks and the alluring aroma of incense.

Every November/December, corresponding to the 8th-10th day of the 10th month in the Bhutanese calendar, the dzong hosts the Tshechu Festival. This grand event showcases traditional Bhutanese culture, engulfing the entire district and especially the dzong in a cultural and religious extravaganza. Visiting this idyllic dzong becomes imperative to immerse yourself in the delights offered by this architectural marvel, serving as the cultural and religious melting pot of Mongar.
